What is a domain name
A domain name is your unique identity address on the Internet. You may subscribe and owns a domain name as long as its available. Domain names are composed of two sections - the descriptive name, and the domain suffix (e.g. .com, .net or .org). Some examples of domain names are "yourdomain.com" and "moovohost.com", "yourdomain.net".
Every company or organization that wants to be on the internet will register a domain name for use as their on-line identity or name that clients will use to access on-line services such as the organization's website or email system.

Of course, there are no strict rules which force you to have a certain type of domain for a certain type of website. You can decide on your own which one is right for you.
